Have you been wondering what’s hot in kitchen design these days? Here are the latest trends we are seeing in kitchens, some new and some ongoing.

Still Larger

Kitchens are still growing in square footage. The center island is becoming larger as with more seating and function. More special features in kitchens means more space is required.

Still Open Plan

Being the heart of the home the kitchen is opening up to other rooms. Taking down a partition wall that opens up a kitchen if happening on may of our renovations. If we cannot completely take down a wall due to loosing too much upper cabinetry or other reasons we will make the openings and doorways wider for a more open feeling.

Style

Contemporary and Transitional are big. Most new kitchens we’ve designed have used a flush door or a flush inset panel door (called Shaker). Clean lines rule. Farmhouse style is popular too.

Gray and White

These colors are still very hot. Most kitchens we have done recently fall in the White, Off-White or Gray families. We do not think whites or neutral colors will go away anytime soon since a kitchen is a big investment and people do not want to make a mistake with color.

Specialty Appliances

More specialty appliances like built-in coffee makers, wine refrigerators and refrigerator drawers are being incorporated. This is having an effect on the size of the kitchen due to the added space requirements.

Bells and Whistles

More people are concerned with what is inside their cabinetry than ever before. Special inserts or compartments for all types of storage exist. Some of these are pantry pullouts, spice pullouts or specially segmented drawers for things like knives, spices, trays and dishes.

Quartz Countertops

Man made quartz countertops are growing in popularity. With so many more colors and good looking designs, these maintenance free surfaces are catching up to the ubiquitous countertop material in high end kitchens, granite. Also when designing the modern kitchen man made quartz allows for a very even consistent look where a lot of granites are highly patterned and therefore each counter looks slightly different.

LED Lighting

Now that the quality and look of LED lighting is getting better and less expensive we are using it for under counter lighting, ceiling lighting and pendants.

Wood Flooring

Wood floors in kitchens are becoming more popular because as the kitchen walls are coming down and opening the kitchen up to other rooms which have wood floors, the logical flooring choice for kitchens is becoming wood.

Outdoor Kitchens

These second kitchens are becoming more popular but not nearly as popular as they are in warmer climates. We have seen more in the northeast but the outdoor kitchen is still more popular in the south and west.
