The High Point Market takes place twice each year, usually in April and October. High Point is where we go to see products that will be available in six to twelve months. Observing these trends helps us stay ahead of the curve and know what to expect and how to apply these trends in our projects.
Black & White
Many manufacturers were showing lots of black and lots of white. They show up in upholstered furniture, case goods, accessories, mirrors, wall paint, pillows, etc. Frequently they are used together. We think that black and white anything is a trend that will stay a while.
Two-tone Finishes on Furniture
Never have we seen so many pieces of furniture that are two-tone. We saw two-tone created using two fabrics or with painted and wood finishes. White and wood were ubiquitous. Wood and paint colors like black were popular too.
Mixed Materials on Furniture
Besides two-tone finishes, many manufacturers are mixing materials to make the furniture more exciting and dynamic. They used wood, metal, glass, acrylic, leather, and rattan in the mix, for instance, a wood dining table with metal legs.
Performance Fabrics
Every manufacturer that does upholstery is showing performance fabrics and indoor/outdoor fabrics. It’s becoming a big thing, and in the future, it may be the only thing used in homes with kids and pets.
European Influence
Not only are the manufacturers doing lower sleeker sectionals, but they are also saying that they looked to Europe for the latest furniture styles. America is behind on this, and everyone is looking at Europe for inspiration.
Nature Inspired
Many manufacturers showed products that have a natural organic influence. It could be metal made to look like florals or rattan and natural materials used in the manufacturing process. Nature is a huge influence this season.
Curved Furniture
Never have we seen so many curved sectionals, curved sofas, and curved everything. The manufacturers are telling us that more modern furniture construction methods are allowing them to do more. Curves are on-trend.
Acrylic Furniture
A lot of manufacturers are showing acrylic furniture. We saw desks, game tables, bar stools, luggage racks, tables, and you name it. If something can be made from acrylic, someone somewhere is most likely making it.
Customization
All major furniture manufacturers are offering customization on furniture. The customizable furniture is geared towards interior designers and less so to retailers because interior designers like to customize furniture. Many offer sofas by the inch or customizable case goods.
Outdoor Furniture
The trend in outdoor furniture is to make it look like indoor furniture. Century and Bernhardt are showing outdoor sofas and outdoor sectionals. You would never tell the difference unless you take a piece apart to see how it was built. As people are spending more time outdoors, the outdoor seating groups are looking more like the indoors.
