What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think interior design? Maybe you think of a beautifully decorated room or a drastic transformation on your favorite home renovation show. And while the age of the internet means everyone becoming an expert about everything, there are many great reasons why you should hire an interior designer for your next home project.
Here’s What Interior Designers Want You to Know
Interior Designers Are Different from Interior Decorators
Did you know that interior designers are different from interior decorators? Decorating involves specifying colors, fabrics, finishes, furnishings, window treatments, and art. And while interior designers DO decorate, we also do so much more. This includes space planning, creating construction documents, schedules, lighting design, universal design, sustainable design, and more. We also have knowledge of building codes, fire codes, and handicap accessibility; we consider and adhere to every rule and law in all our projects.
In fact, “Interior Designer” is a regulated title in the majority of the United States. That means not everyone can label themselves with that title. To earn the title of “Interior Designer” in most states, one must have a Bachelor or Master degree, have 2-4 years of full-time experience under a certified Interior Designer, and pass the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) Examination.

We Are Trained to Listen to the Client
Sometimes, clients expect us to look at their homes and work our magic. Unfortunately, that’s not how the design process works! When you look at an interior designer’s portfolio, you may see a variety of different designs. That’s because our portfolio showcases our best work; it’s not to present just one type of design aesthetic.
Every space is different, and every client’s taste is unique. That’s why we are trained to listen to what you want in both design and function. Once we know what you are looking for, we can then present you different options to achieve the right results. We are here to help you solve any problems you are having with your space so that it can better fit your lifestyle, as well as stay within your budget!

What You See on Television Is Not the Whole Picture
Everyone loves an amazing and dramatic transformation. Ever since Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, many other home renovation shows have aired, and viewers always love seeing the big reveal.
What you don’t see on TV, though, are homeowners signing off on budgets and making Pinterest boards and wish lists for what they want in their to-be renovated home. In fact, some homeowners already own the house they end up choosing on the show, despite looking at other potential houses in order to follow a TV show’s episode format. So, when you hire an interior designer, don’t expect us to barge in and make big changes without your input. Instead, we will work closely with you to turn your dream home into reality.
