Painting your home can make everything feel fresh and new. It is also an easy update doesn’t take up too much time compared to other home projects. Some people choose to do accent walls while others want bright colors, but like everything, there is a method to the madness. Here are some tips on how to best refresh your home’s paint color.
1. Take Some Photos
Imagine that you are out looking at colors to paint your home, and you’re trying to decide on what colors you would like to use. One suggestion from interior designers is to take a picture of the colors you want to use and then take a picture of the room you want to paint. Multiple photos are even better if you can get the room from different angles. Convert that picture to black and white and look for walls that stand out. As you look at your black and white photos, look for where the colors would seem to hold the most value.
2. Neutral Tones
Painting your home in neutral colors gives you more flexibility to add pops of color here and there as you see fit. Lighter neutrals also provide a light and airy feel to your home while you add color and texture with throws and pillows or wall hangings. It is a lot easier to swap out the theme with neutral colors on the walls as a bonus.
You can also vary your neutral shades to add interest and variety without overpowering the space. Doing so creates a monochromatic color scheme you can enjoy every day. If you do, you will want to limit yourself to no more than a couple of different complementary shades so you don’t overwhelm the space.
3. Limit Your Colors
On the other hand, if you enjoy colors, do not be afraid to use them, but limit yourselves to no more than 2-3 colors. Bold colors are fun, but you don’t want to put in too much of them because they can make the house feel cluttered even though they do not take up any physical space. Remember, you want to balance your colors to get the most significant benefit from them. A balanced color palette includes a neutral or base color along with a shade or two that complement each other. Too many colors make your room feel and look overwhelming, so be intentional about the colors you choose.
When you want to refresh your home’s paint color, start with the colors you enjoy and work from there. You should feel happy to enter your home, and if you don’t, changing the paint might be just what you need. Find inspiration outdoors or your favorite piece of art to find the colors that will set the mood in your home.
