Choosing a Color Scheme for Your Home

There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your home color schemes. The ideal “home” is different for everyone. Our job at WPL Interior Design is to help you achieve a home that represents your idea of welcoming, relaxation, socializing, and more.

Finding the right colors for your home is a huge part of that design process and there are many ways to add color to your home aside from the paint on your walls. Patterns in your upholstery, artwork, accent pillows, light fixtures, and other pieces of decor will all contribute to your home’s color scheme. So if you want to update the color scheme in a room, start by looking at the furniture and decor you already have.

Matching Color and Style

Some colors will work better with specific architectural and design styles. Don’t worry about following any hard rules; in the end, it’s your home and you should style it the way you want! But looking at existing homes that are like yours is a great way to be inspired and find the look you want to achieve. Love the beach? Try searching for coastal homes where styles can go from light and airy to many pops of vibrant colors. Or if you have a more traditional home, you may be inspired by other timeless homes that have clean lines and mixed textures.

Building Your Palette

Some homeowners have enough trouble choosing just one paint color for their walls that trying to choose a variety of colors for an entire room seems daunting. You can incorporate as many colors into a room as you’d like, but we always recommend starting simple. It is worth taking the time to slowly build your home’s color scheme!

This usually starts by choosing one overarching color or pattern that will fill up most of a room. From there, you can start choosing complimenting colors. Choosing other shades of the same hue can add dimension to the room without being overbearing. You could also add interest to the room with a splash of another color. Or, if a room is looking particularly bold and bright, you may want to balance the energy out with some subtle neutrals. Choosing one color at a time will feel less overwhelming and ensures that your home will achieve the exact style you want.

Testing Your Color Scheme

Paint never looks the same on a paper swatch as it does on a wall. As you finalize your color choices, get test paints to try them out at home. This will give you an accurate idea of what they will actually look like on your walls!
