You are probably familiar with the terms custom and “off-the-rack” as it applies to the clothing industry, but the same principals and characteristics apply to the interior design field. When specifying furnishings for an interior we deal in custom items and off-the-shelf items. As in fashion, one of the reasons to go custom is to get the proper fit as opposed to the closest fit, but not exact fit. Going custom gets you exactly what you want as opposed to what is available and in stock now. Your furnishings size, materials, colors, finishes, functions and detailing can all be customized.
There are many benefits to doing custom furnishings. You get the best fitting piece for your space and the best design appropriateness for your interior. The quality level is usually higher in custom pieces and you won’t see your design anywhere else. The value per dollars spent is usually higher in custom as well. Also, as custom is often sourced locally not globally, you are supporting the local economy. And as local means lower shipping and fuel costs, that translates to a more environmentally friendly end result as well.
Are there drawbacks? There can be a few. Prices can be higher on custom pieces as they are made one at a time and not on a factory assembly line. Lead times can be longer on custom items as there is more design time involved and more custom details to be worked out. The production time can be longer too because custom is being built by craftsman and not on an assembly line. However, these drawbacks aren’t always the case. We frequently do custom pieces at a lower cost and with faster lead times.
We are always customizing furnishings for interiors and the range of items that can be customized is almost endless. Furniture, rugs, fabrics, lighting, paint, moldings, built-ins, bedding, drapery, wallpaper, murals, flooring, tile can all be customized. The list is goes on and on and almost anything can be customized.
So next time you are thinking of a new piece of furniture or furnishing for your interior and you can’t find what you want or don’t like what’s available to you consider customization. We would be glad to help you realize your vision. Here are just a few of the types of items that can be customized.
