Designers are highly creative people who are charged with blending art and science into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing design solution for a space, home or business, all while living within the real world limitations of the laws of physics, realistic time lines and realistic budgets.
We are jugglers, multi-taskers, part psychotherapist, part businessperson, part lawyer, part artist, part bookkeeper, part project manager, part doctor for your home and part schmoozer and peacekeeper. We are dreamers, realists, inventors, pragmatist, idealists all rolled into one. We wear many hats and due to our creativity often have trouble concentrating on one thing at a time. We have to aim high in our design and then bring our ideas down to the real world so that we can actually execute a good plan for a design solution.
One shouldn’t feel intimidated in speaking to a designer. We love to talk about design, trends, colors, lighting, furnishings, renovations, and we love a good horror story. In fact once you get us going at a cocktail party it’s hard to shut us up. We live to make beautiful three-dimensional works of art that people work, play and rest in. Without you as our muse we have little to do and often re-decorate our own decorating.
Unfortunately some times television and movies have labeled us as aloof, ditsy, dictatorial, snobby, or condescending. There is that stereotype of the grand decorator in the big hat waving her arms about. But these days interior designers (as we prefer to be called) are highly educated people who know about fire and building codes, means of egress, and the latest trends and technologies that make the built environment a safer and more efficient place to live and work.
