Updating your window treatments doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to replace everything surrounding your windows. There are many ways to upgrade window treatments that look trendy and provide your space with the perfect accent.
Say Goodbye to Valances
Depending on when you last bought your window treatment, your valances may be significantly dating your windows. A simple window update is to simply remove the valances and opt for a cleaner style by keeping the window panels. If your room is a formal space, consider a valance with a more modern and trending fabric pattern in its place.
Consider Trimming
Sometimes, simple trim is the answer you didn’t know you were looking for when it comes to updating your window treatments. Ribbons, lace, or a contrasting material can work well to update an older window treatment. Adding material isn’t hard to do either and you don’t need to be an expert seamstress to do it. Instead, you can use trim adhesive to get that new look that you’re going for. Don’t be afraid to play with colors, too. A contrasting color may give you the fresh update you really want.
Layering, Lining, and Mixing
Layers can be fantastic if you mix them up the right way. Let’s say you have older sheer curtains at the moment, but you still love your main window panels. You’d want to change the sheers for new blinds or maybe a fresh set of more modern sheers.
You might even consider lining your curtains with blackout material for a more luxurious window treatment upgrade. Another way to refresh your curtains is to mix them up with a different, but coordinating set of window panels. A solid and print work best, and you can choose to mix and match entire panels or cut strips out and sew them in if you’re handy with a needle.
Change the Hardware
You can do two things with hardware that can completely update your window treatment in just a few minutes. The easiest fix is to swap the curtain rods or change out the ends. Swirling designs or leaves add a touch of elegance and style to your windows. You can also change up the color with a range of metallic and muted options to choose from.
The second thing you can do is simply move the rods from where they are and raise them a little higher. Rods placed higher than the window give your window treatment a sweeping, elegant appearance. To install them in the right place, consider moving the rods to about two-thirds of the space between the ceiling and the window. If your curtains don’t reach the floor from that height, you’ll want to consider replacing them or adding trim or fabric at the end to extend them all the way to the ground.
It Doesn’t Take Much
Updating or upgrading your curtains can be a simple crafty project over a weekend. On the other hand, you can always choose to do a complete replacement if that’s more your style. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box a little, especially since the current trends are all about embracing vintage vibes and making your space your own.
