Late last year, Pantone announced its 2018 Color of the Year. The Color of the Year is a highly anticipated announcement each year within the design community and among followers and observers of color trends. As designers we are always on the lookout to see which colors will be showing up in fabric lines, furnishings, rugs, accessories, art, make-up, fashion, and everyday household objects. These yearly color trends have a ripple effect on many other product categories.

For 2018 Pantone selected its color Ultra Violet #18-3838. The Color of the Year, which is announced in the fall of the previous year, reflects the current cultural climate and starter trends being observed. It influences the trends in the year of its namesake and affects all facets of design including fashion design, interior design, industrial design, architecture, and even automotive design. Pantone has been the leader in selecting and promoting the “Color of the Year” since the year 2000.

Pantone’s color for 2018, Ultra Violet, was chosen according to Leatrice Eisman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, because “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra-Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
Almost immediately upon the announcement for 2018, we have seen Ultra Violet highlighted and incorporated into the lines of many manufacturers which service the interior design community. Curated by Kravet has highlighted many accessories on its website which are or incorporate the Ultra Violet hue. We have highlighted some of our own products from our online shop, seen here. The Ultra Violet color can also be seen in fashion and make-up which often precedes interior design trends and helps to inform the selection of the color of the year. “None of this happens in a vacuum; every facet of design helps to influence every other facet of design. We are all influenced and affected by what we observe around us.” According to Marcello Luzi, Managing Principal at WPL Interior Design.
