Preparing for a Home Renovation

Renovating and remodeling a home is never as simple as slapping on new paint, switching out furniture, and instantly enjoying your new dream home. Before changing up anything in your home, it’s crucial to consider your goals and plan out the renovation process. Some homeowners may want to update a single room, kitchens being the most popular room to renovate. Others may want to improve their whole entire house. Whatever type of home renovation you want to do, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Create a Plan

The first step to any home renovation is creating a plan. This consists of a few different steps. First, we recommend our clients to find pictures of rooms or furnishings they like to use as inspiration. Second, make a list of goals, wants, and needs of the room you plan on remodeling. If you are thinking of changing different rooms, create a separate list for each room. Consider the purpose of each room and your daily routine. Another factor to think about is whether or not you plan on changing the structure of your home. If so, you may need to get a permit before moving forward.

Set a Budget

Once you have a rough plan for your home renovation, it’s time to determine your budget. Whether your project is big or small, everyone has a budget. Contractors, permits, materials, labor, furnishings, and decor are all items that should be included in your budget; some clients will also set aside a percentage for unexpected costs. Having a budget will allow you to prioritize your plans as well as help solidify your plans into reality.

If you’ve been thinking of improving your home, there’s no better time than to start now. Planning a home renovation takes times and the general rule of thumb is to start planning 6-12 months in advance before you plan on starting your project. Aside from outlining your design vision, that time also involves implementing a timeline, finding and hiring contractors, figuring out what permits you’ll need, and more.

Even a smaller project involves multiple components, which is why having an interior designer ensures your home renovation is done the right way.

WPL Interior Design has clients all over the country and we’ve had many remote and long-distance design projects. Set up a consultation with us by filling out our online design form. From there, we can go over what you’d like to achieve with your home renovation, as well as guide you through the entire process, from beginning to end.
