When many people think of interior design, one of the first things they think of is decorating a space. And while decorating is fun, there is a lot more to sprucing up a space than just making it look good! As designers, we think about our clients’ lifestyles, the purpose of what a room is, and how we can make the room function to the best of its ability.
For most homeowners, decorating and personalizing a home is easy when you’re considering your own style and taste. So what about styling a guest room that works for friends and family alike? Many considerations you’ll make for your guest room design will likely be more neutral than what you would decide for your own room. The goal of styling a guest room is to create a comfortable and upscale room that will appeal to everyone. Here are some tips to spruce up your guest bedroom and make it inviting and relaxing to all.
Clean Towels and Linens
First and foremost, you’ll want to have fresh sheets and towels ready for your guests. You can’t go wrong with hotel-quality, breathable cotton sheets. Just like hotels and resorts, choose white sheets for the cleanest look; they will be sure to instantly put your guests at ease and into relaxation mode. Add color and personality to your room with a colorful or patterned comforter set. Store some extra towels and a throw in the closet or an ottoman (which can double as extra seating) for your guests in case they need it.
Bottled Beverages and Glasses
Guests will appreciate having some light refreshments in their room, especially if they’ve spent the day traveling! Bottled beverages and a set of glasses for your guests is an easy way to show them that you are happy to host them in your home. You could even go the extra mile and provide some snacks, like a bowl of fruit or little chocolates.
Fresh Flowers
Fresh flowers are a quick and inexpensive way to brighten up a room. Some of our clients like to custom order floral arrangements for their guests, but even fresh cut flowers in a vase will go a long way.
Adjustable Window Treatments
Allow your guests to adjust the natural lighting in their room by adding blinds, shades, or draperies to your windows. If your guest bedroom is facing the east, consider getting blackout drapes to block out the sunlight in the early morning.
Reading and Entertainment
Provide some quick-read books and magazines for your guests to browse through during their downtime or as they wind down before bed. Don’t forget to also provide some bedside lighting, too, so your guests can enjoy their reading without disturbing others. If you have a television in the guest bedroom, have some DVDs available, or, even better, a streaming device such as Apple TV, the Amazon Fire Stick, or a Roku.
